Electricity in Ocala runs around 16 cents per kilowatt hour. For a house with a pool, the pump is usually the second largest electrical load after the air conditioner, and it is the one nobody thinks about because it runs on a timer in the side yard.
The case for variable speed gets made with vague percentages most of the time. Here is the actual arithmetic for a typical Marion County pool.
The math on a standard Ocala pool
Take a 14 by 28 foot pool with an older 1.5 horsepower single speed pump. That motor draws somewhere around 1,900 watts under load. Run it eight hours a day and you use about 15.2 kilowatt hours daily, or roughly 5,550 kilowatt hours a year. At 16 cents, that is close to $890 annually just to move water in a circle.
Now put a variable speed pump on the same plumbing and run it twelve hours a day at 1,400 rpm. Power draw at that speed sits in the neighborhood of 250 watts. That is 3 kilowatt hours a day, about 1,100 a year, or roughly $175.
The gap is over $700 a year on those assumptions. Cut the estimate in half to be conservative and it is still $350 a year, every year, for a part that was going to need replacing eventually anyway.
Why slowing the motor down saves so much
The savings look too good until you know the physics. Pump power scales with the cube of speed. Drop the motor to half speed and it draws about one eighth the power while still moving half the water. Run it twice as long at that speed and you have filtered the same volume for roughly a quarter of the electricity.
Longer, slower runs also do a better job. Water gets skimmed across more hours of the day instead of in one loud burst. Chemicals distribute evenly. The filter catches finer particles because water passes through it slowly rather than being shoved. Salt cells generate chlorine over a longer window, which holds a steadier residual. And a variable speed pump at low rpm is quiet enough that you can hold a conversation standing next to it.
You may not have a choice on your next pump
Federal appliance standards for dedicated purpose pool pumps took effect in July 2021. In practice, most replacement pumps above one total horsepower now have to be variable speed to meet the requirement. If your single speed motor fails, the direct swap you were picturing may not exist anymore.
That matters for planning. Replacing a pump on your own schedule means comparing models, sizing the unit properly and getting the controls you want. Replacing one in July because it seized over the weekend means taking whatever is on the shelf.
What the swap involves
Most Ocala pools built in the last twenty five years take a variable speed pump without replumbing. The work is usually a half day: disconnect and remove the old unit, adapt the suction and return unions, mount and wire the new pump, tie in the bonding wire, then set the speed schedule and prime the system.
Two things trip up a straight swap. Older pools sometimes have undersized plumbing, typically inch and a half pipe, which limits how much you gain at higher speeds. And pools running on a mechanical time clock need that clock removed, since the pump handles its own scheduling.
Sizing matters more than the horsepower on the label. A pump that is too large for the plumbing wastes the advantage. Ask about rebates before you buy
Marion County is served by both Ocala Electric Utility and Duke Energy Florida depending on where you sit. Utility rebate programs for pool pumps come and go, and the amounts change year to year. It takes one phone call to your provider to find out what is available before the install, and it is worth making.
Worth doing at the same time
